Cycling shorts — without bibs — cover a range of riding styles, from mountain bike trail shorts worn over a liner to casual riding and commuting where bib construction isn't practical.

MTB shorts prioritize durability, freedom of movement, and a relaxed fit that works on and off the bike; they're typically worn over a padded liner. Road and fitness shorts without bibs work for recreational riding and warmer-weather training when a bib isn't preferred. Chamois quality and liner fit still matter in padded shorts — the same considerations apply as with bibs. Riders covering serious road distance or multi-hour efforts are typically better served by bib shorts, which stay in place more consistently.
