About The Abus Macator MIPS Helmet

The Abus Macator MIPS is a road-style helmet built for everyday cyclists who want genuine safety technology without a premium price tag. MIPS rotational protection is integrated at a price point where many competing helmets still skip it — making the Macator a defensible choice for commuters, fitness riders, and recreational road cyclists who ride regularly enough to care about what's on their head. In-Mold construction — a fused EPS foam core and polycarbonate shell — delivers the structural integrity found in higher-end helmets at an accessible weight: 270g in Small, 290g in Medium, 310g in Large.

Fit is handled by the Zoom Ace Urban full-ring retention system, an encircling cradle that wraps the entire head perimeter and adjusts via a dial at the rear. The full-ring design distributes pressure more evenly than partial-ring systems and makes single-hand fit adjustments practical — useful when you're already rolling. The Fidlock magnetic buckle snaps shut one-handed without the fumbling of traditional side-release clips. Thirteen vents (5 inlets, 8 outlets) with an integrated bug mesh keep airflow moving without letting insects through.

Who It's For

  • Commuters and recreational road cyclists who want MIPS protection at an entry-level price
  • Riders with a ponytail — the Macator accommodates it where many road helmets don't
  • Anyone upgrading from a bare-bones helmet who wants a meaningful step up in fit quality and safety tech
  • Consider a different helmet if you need a visor for mixed-surface riding, or if you're logging high-mileage training rides where top-tier ventilation and minimal weight are priorities

What to Look For

  • Head circumference over hat size — use a soft tape measure before selecting S (51–55cm), M (52–58cm), or L (58–62cm)
  • MIPS vs. no MIPS — at this price tier, not all helmets include rotational protection; the Macator does
  • Retention system type — full-ring cradles like the Zoom Ace Urban fit more head shapes evenly than partial-ring alternatives

Key Features

In-Mold Construction with MIPS. The EPS core and polycarbonate shell are bonded during manufacturing, producing a lighter, more durable structure than helmets with a separately applied shell. The MIPS slip-plane liner sits inside and allows the helmet to move independently from the head on oblique impact — the type most common in real crashes — reducing rotational energy transferred to the brain.

Zoom Ace Urban Fit System. The encircling retention ring connects to a micro-adjustable dial at the rear. Unlike partial cradles that contact only the back of the skull, the full ring stabilizes the helmet across the whole head circumference, reducing side-to-side shift on longer rides and keeping the helmet properly positioned on impact.

Fidlock Magnetic Buckle. The chin strap closes with a magnetic Fidlock buckle — bring the two pieces near each other and they align and click shut. It's meaningfully faster than a traditional buckle, which adds up when you're helmet on/off all day for commuting.

Ventilation. Thirteen total vents with channeled internal airflow move air across the head. The integrated bug mesh keeps inlets functional on path-adjacent or mixed routes.

Rider Intent Summary

  • Biggest strengths: MIPS protection and Fidlock magnetic closure at an entry price; full-ring fit system; ponytail compatible
  • Tradeoffs: Not multi-impact rated; no visor; ventilation is capable but not optimized for performance riding
  • What makes it different: Combining MIPS with a Fidlock buckle at this price bracket is genuinely uncommon

Victory's Take

At Victory Bicycle Studio, we recommend the Abus Macator MIPS to riders who want a complete safety feature set without spending up to a training-focused lid — the MIPS liner and Fidlock buckle alone set it apart from generic alternatives at the same price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free shipping?

We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.

How much does shipping cost?

For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!

How can I track my order?

When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order.  If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
