About The ENVE AR 40 Carbon Tubeless Rear Bike Wheel
The Enve AR40 is a 40mm deep, carbon disc road wheel built for riders who move between pavement and gravel without wanting to compromise on either. Its 25mm internal rim width accommodates a wide range of tire volumes — from fast road rubber to gravel-ready tires up to the rim's rated width — while the 40mm depth delivers measurable aerodynamic benefit without the handling penalty of a deeper section. This rear wheel uses a 12mm thru-axle, 142mm spacing and is spec'd here with an SRAM XDR cassette body, making it a direct fit for SRAM's road and multigear drivetrains.
What sets the AR40 apart within ENVE's Foundation lineup is the combination of wind tunnel validation and hookless rim architecture. ENVE developed the AR40 in the Mercedes-Benz Formula One wind tunnel — the same facility used for the SES aero wheel family — to ensure the 40mm profile performs in real-world crosswind conditions, not just a vacuum. The Wide Hookless Bead (patent pending) replaces the traditional hooked rim edge with a design that dissipates impact energy at the bead, reducing the risk of pinch flats with both tubed and tubeless setups. Molded Spoke Hole Technology reinforces each spoke interface directly in the carbon laminate, eliminating drilled holes that can compromise rim integrity over time.
Who It's For
- Road riders who want a single wheelset that handles crits, fondos, and light gravel without swapping wheels
- SRAM-drivetrain riders running AXS or mechanical groupsets with XDR freehub compatibility
- Riders upgrading from alloy or entry-level carbon wheels seeking a validated aero rim without moving to a deep-section race wheel
- Tubeless converts who want a hookless rim with consistent, accurate bead seat tolerances
- Riders who should look elsewhere: those needing Shimano/HG freehub compatibility, or riders seeking maximum aero depth (50mm+) for flat road racing
What to Look For
- Tire compatibility: The AR40's hookless design requires tires rated for hookless rims. Confirm your tire of choice is explicitly hookless-compatible before mounting — not all road tires qualify.
- Intended terrain: The 40mm depth and 25mm internal width sit at a genuine crossover point. If your riding is 90%+ flat road racing, a deeper rim may serve you better. If you mix surfaces regularly, the AR40's versatility is the point.
- Drivetrain fit: This wheel ships with an SRAM XDR cassette body. Shimano and Campagnolo users will need the appropriate freehub body — confirm availability before ordering.
Key Features
40mm Aerodynamic Rim Profile. Wind tunnel developed in the Mercedes-Benz F1 facility, the AR40's 40mm depth provides real-world aero performance — accounting for yaw angles and crosswinds, not just straight-line airflow. For most riders, 40mm hits a practical sweet spot: meaningful speed advantage without the handling sensitivity of 50mm+ rims in crosswinds.
25mm Internal Rim Width. The wider internal channel supports larger tire volumes and improves the tire's contact patch shape. Road riders running 28–32mm tires will see better cornering stability and a more supple ride without giving up rolling efficiency. The width also opens the door to light gravel tires where terrain calls for it.
Wide Hookless Bead (Patent Pending). ENVE's hookless rim design holds tighter tolerances at the bead seat diameter than traditional hooked profiles, which translates to more consistent tubeless seating and a reduced risk of catastrophic bead failure. The Wide Hookless Bead adds an impact-energy-dissipating feature at the rim's leading edge, a meaningful upgrade for riders on rougher roads or gravel.
Molded Spoke Hole Technology. Rather than drilling spoke holes through the finished carbon, ENVE integrates them during the molding process. The result is a rim with no compromised fiber paths around each spoke interface — stronger where load is highest, and more durable over the life of the wheel.
Center-Lock Disc, Tubeless Ready. Center-lock disc compatibility keeps the rotor interface simple and consistent. The tubeless-ready construction pairs with the hookless bead design for a setup that works reliably with the right tire/sealant combination.
Rider Intent Summary
- Biggest strengths: Wind tunnel-validated aerodynamics at a versatile 40mm depth, wide hookless architecture for reliable tubeless performance, and molded construction for long-term durability
- Tradeoffs: Hookless compatibility limits tire selection; SRAM XDR-only freehub body (as configured); not the deepest option for pure road racing
- What makes it different: The AR40 is the only wheel in ENVE's Foundation lineup combining F1 wind tunnel development with a wide hookless bead — purpose-built for riders who need one wheel to do more than one thing
Victory's Take
We stock the AR40 at Victory Bicycle Studio because it solves a real problem for a lot of our customers: they want a carbon aero wheel that actually works when the road turns rough. If you're unsure whether this is the right build for your setup — axle spacing, freehub body, or tire selection — our fitting team can walk you through it before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer free shipping?
We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.
How much does shipping cost?
For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!
How can I track my order?
When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order. If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
