About The Trek Ballista Mips Aero Road Bike Helmet

The Trek Ballista Mips is Trek's flagship aero road helmet, built for riders where watts and seconds matter. Its elongated teardrop shell is engineered to slice through wind rather than trap it, and—unlike many aero lids that sacrifice comfort for speed—Ballista integrates a genuine ventilation system that keeps it usable on hot days and long efforts. At 275g in a Medium, it competes on weight while delivering the aerodynamic profile you'd expect from a dedicated race helmet.

What sets the Ballista apart in the aero category is its fully integrated Mips Air system—lighter and more open than traditional Mips liners, designed to help reduce rotational forces in an oblique impact without adding bulk or significantly restricting airflow. Add a single-lace BOA® fit dial for tool-free micro-adjustment on the fly, a rubberized sunglasses port that actually holds glasses securely, and Trek's Crash Replacement Guarantee, and this is a helmet designed to be ridden hard and bought with confidence.

Who It's For

  • Road racers, criterium riders, and competitive cyclists for whom aerodynamic efficiency is a primary concern
  • Riders who want an aero helmet they can comfortably wear for 3–5+ hour training rides, not just race-day efforts
  • Cyclists prioritizing a dialed, repeatable fit via BOA® rather than ratchet systems
  • Consider a different helmet if you primarily ride in extreme heat and rely on maximum ventilation—a traditional vented road helmet will outperform any aero lid in airflow volume

What to Look For

  • Fit and size: Ballista uses a BOA® lace system that adjusts 360° around the head—measure your head circumference carefully: S (51–57cm), M (54–60cm), L (58–63cm)
  • Intended use: Designed for road racing and fast training; not suited for gravel, mountain, or commuting use cases
  • Safety certification: Complies with U.S. CPSC safety standards for cyclists age 5 and over—confirm your local standards if outside the U.S.

Key Features

Aerodynamic shell with integrated ventilation. Ballista's aero shape is optimized to reduce drag without fully closing off airflow. The venting channels are positioned to move air across the head during motion, making it significantly more comfortable than earlier-generation aero helmets that ran hot.

Mips Air safety system. The Mips Air liner is Trek's lightest, most open implementation of Mips technology. It sits inside the helmet with minimal contact points, designed to allow the shell to rotate slightly relative to the head in an angled impact—a key factor in reducing transmitted rotational forces associated with certain head injuries.

BOA® single-lace fit system. One dial controls a continuous lace that wraps 360° around the interior. This means fit adjustments are even and consistent, with no pressure hot spots. The system works reliably with gloves on, which matters when you need to dial in mid-ride.

Rubberized sunglasses docking port. The port grips glasses arms without relying on foam inserts or clips that can fail or lose grip over time. A practical detail that matters most when you're descending and need glasses stowed quickly.

Crash Replacement Guarantee + 30-Day Unconditional Guarantee. Trek replaces the helmet free within one year if you crash in it. The 30-day guarantee covers fit or comfort dissatisfaction—no questions asked.

Rider Intent Summary

  • Biggest strengths: Genuine aerodynamic performance, integrated Mips Air safety, dialed BOA® fit system—all in a helmet that's wearable on long training days
  • Tradeoffs: Ventilation, while better than older aero designs, won't match an open-vented road helmet; aero-optimized for road use only
  • What makes it different: The Mips Air integration is specific to Ballista's shell geometry—this isn't a generic liner dropped into an existing design, but a system developed for this helmet's aerodynamic profile

Victory's Take

We recommend the Ballista to riders who are serious about speed and want a single helmet that works on race day and in training without becoming miserable after an hour. At Victory Bicycle Studio, we find it fits best on riders who've confirmed their head circumference against Trek's size chart—if you're between sizes, come in and we'll fit you properly before you commit.

What you get

  • Excellent ventilation system
  • Mips Air system is light, cool, and designed to help reduce rotational forces

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free shipping?

We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.

How much does shipping cost?

For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!

How can I track my order?

When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order.  If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
