About The Trek Tyro Youth Bike Helmet

The Trek Tyro is a dedicated youth helmet built for riders ages 5 and up, with a 50–55cm fit range that covers most school-age children. Where many youth helmets cut corners on fit mechanics, the Tyro applies adult-level technology — a Fidlock magnetic buckle and Headmaster 3 dial system — in a package kids can manage on their own.

At 305 grams with an in-molded EPS shell that extends rear head coverage beyond what entry-level youth helmets typically offer, the Tyro is built for real use rather than bare compliance. The Crash Replacement Guarantee backs it with a free replacement if the helmet is involved in a crash within the first year of ownership — a practical benefit for parents buying a helmet for an active, growing rider.

Who It's For

  • Kids ages 5 and up with head circumferences between 50–55cm riding on pavement, paths, and neighborhood roads
  • Children who struggle with traditional snap buckles — the Fidlock magnetic closure lets kids fasten their chin strap independently
  • Families who want a safety-backed purchase; the one-year Crash Replacement Guarantee reduces the cost of replacing a helmet after impact
  • Riders who have outgrown a balance bike or toddler helmet and need a properly fitted, full-featured youth lid

Consider a different helmet for riders outside the 50–55cm range, or for trail and mountain biking where MIPS or additional coverage is typically recommended.

What to Look For

  • Head circumference first. The Tyro fits 50–55cm. Measure before buying — fit determines protection.
  • Independent fastening. The Fidlock magnetic buckle is the standout feature here. If a child struggles with standard snap buckles, this is worth prioritizing over other options at this price point.
  • Intended use. The Tyro meets CPSC bicycle helmet standards and ASTM youth-specific standards, making it appropriate for road and recreational riding — not aggressive trail use.

Key Features

In-molded EPS shell with extended rear coverage. The shell is fused directly to the foam liner rather than bonded separately, producing a more durable, lighter structure. The additional rear coverage protects an area frequently exposed on entry-level youth helmets — meaningful given how young riders tend to fall.

Fidlock magnetic buckle. Traditional snap buckles frustrate young riders, leading to helmets worn unbuckled or poorly positioned. The Fidlock system uses a magnetic guide to self-align and click closed, letting kids fasten their own chin strap reliably. It's the feature parents consistently notice in daily use.

Headmaster 3 dial fit system. The rear retention dial adjusts the cradle in seconds across the full 50–55cm range, accommodating growth, hair, and seasonal layering without tools or trial and error.

ASTM youth-specific standards compliance. ASTM tests youth helmets using a smaller, lighter headform that reflects a child's actual head mass — not a scaled-down adult test. This is the more relevant certification for this age group.

Moisture-wicking, washable pads. The interior pads pull sweat away from the head and are removable for washing — a practical detail for a helmet worn regularly across a full riding season.

Rider Intent Summary

  • Biggest strengths: Fidlock magnetic buckle for independent fastening, extended rear EPS coverage, and adult-grade dial fit in a true youth helmet
  • Tradeoffs: Single size (50–55cm only); no MIPS; best suited for road and recreational use rather than trail riding
  • What makes it different: Adult-level fit and closure technology in a dedicated youth helmet, backed by a one-year Crash Replacement Guarantee tested to ASTM youth headform standards

Victory's Take

At Victory Bicycle Studio, we recommend the Tyro for families who want a helmet their kid will actually wear correctly — the Fidlock buckle removes the daily friction of chin strap snapping, and the Headmaster 3 dial takes the guesswork out of fit. It's a thoughtfully built helmet that earns its place on the shop floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free shipping?

We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.

How much does shipping cost?

For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!

How can I track my order?

When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order.  If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
