About The Zipp 303 Carbon XPLR S Rear Bicycle Wheel - XDR
The Zipp 303 XPLR S is a carbon gravel wheel built around a 32mm internal width, 54mm deep hookless rim — a profile wide enough to unlock real terrain performance gains without the cost of Zipp's flagship gravel lineup. Available in the SRAM XDR cassette body configuration with a 12x142mm thru-axle and Center-Lock disc interface, this rear wheel is purpose-built for riders who want measurable aero and compliance benefits from their wheels, not just a weight number on a spec sheet.
The extra rim width changes how a gravel tire behaves under pressure. Running a compatible tubeless tire at lower PSI on a 32mm-wide rim produces a larger contact patch without the sidewall squirm you'd get on a narrower rim — that translates directly to better grip in loose corners, more traction on loose climbs, and reduced hand fatigue over long days in the saddle. The 54mm rim depth creates a smooth aerodynamic transition with wider gravel tires, where a shallower rim would leave an aerodynamic gap between tire and rim profile.
Who It's For
- Gravel riders running SRAM AXS or any SRAM XDR-compatible drivetrain who want a meaningful wheel upgrade
- Riders doing mixed-surface riding — pavement to gravel transitions — where aero efficiency and vibration damping both matter
- Cyclists who want carbon rims and tubeless performance without paying for Zipp's top-tier XPLR wheelset
- Riders who prioritize durability and serviceability (replaceable pawl-spring hub, stainless cartridge bearings) on technical terrain
Consider a different wheel if you're running Shimano or SRAM HG cassettes — this wheel is XDR-only.
What to Look For
- Tire compatibility: This rim uses hookless construction. Only run Zipp-approved tires at manufacturer-specified pressures. Not all tubeless gravel tires are hookless-compatible — confirm before purchasing.
- Rim width vs. frame clearance: The 32mm internal width is optimized for tires 40mm and wider. Confirm your frame and fork have adequate tire clearance.
- Hub interface: Center-Lock disc only. Verify your brake rotor uses Center-Lock mounting, not 6-bolt.
Key Features
UD Carbon Hookless Rim — 32mm Wide, 54mm Deep: The unidirectional carbon construction keeps weight down while the hookless bead seat provides a uniform rim profile optimized for tubeless seating. At 32mm internal width and 54mm depth, this is one of the wider-and-deeper combinations in the gravel-specific wheel segment — designed to optimize airflow around the larger tire profiles common in gravel riding and racing.
Total System Efficiency for Gravel: Zipp's TSE approach treats aerodynamic integration between rim and tire as a system. On gravel-specific tires, the 303 XPLR S rim profile reduces the aerodynamic penalty of running wider rubber rather than treating width as a trade-off. The seamless transition between rim and tire shoulder is the functional outcome of this design approach.
176 Series Hub with 3-Pawl Leaf Spring: The 176 hub uses three pawl leaf springs for quiet, reliable freehub engagement. CX-Sprint bladed spokes laced with brass nipples add durability and allow straightforward truing in the field. Stainless steel cartridge bearings resist contamination on wet and muddy terrain.
Rider Intent Summary
- Biggest strengths: Wide, deep carbon rim that improves both aerodynamic efficiency and tire compliance on gravel; tubeless-ready construction with genuine performance credentials from Zipp's gravel-specific development
- Tradeoffs: Hookless construction limits tire selection to approved models; XDR cassette body limits compatibility to SRAM drivetrains
- What makes it different: The 54mm depth is unusually deep for a gravel wheel — Zipp's position is that deeper rims perform better on gravel when the rim and tire profile are co-designed as an integrated aerodynamic system
Victory's Take
At Victory Bicycle Studio, we recommend the 303 XPLR S to SRAM AXS gravel riders looking for a genuine performance upgrade — not just lighter wheels, but a wheel that actively changes how a gravel tire behaves at speed and on rough terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer free shipping?
We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.
How much does shipping cost?
For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!
How can I track my order?
When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order. If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
