About The ENVE AR40 Carbon Tubeless Front Bike Wheel
The Enve AR40 Carbon Front Wheel is a 40mm deep carbon rim built for riders who move between pavement and unpaved terrain without wanting two separate wheelsets. With a 25mm internal rim width and an aero profile optimized around 27mm tires, it occupies a specific and deliberate position: aerodynamic enough for road performance, structurally qualified to ENVE's gravel standards for mixed-surface riding.
What distinguishes the AR40 within ENVE's Foundation lineup is that gravel qualification. This isn't a road-depth rim adapted for occasional dirt use — it's been tested for the lateral and impact loads that unpaved terrain demands. Riders get 40mm of aero depth without compromising on durability when the road turns rough. The wheel is tubeless-only, running Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes, Alpina Nylock brass nipples, and the ENVE INNERDRIVE Foundation hub with a 12x100mm thru-axle and Centerlock disc interface.
Who It's For
- All-road and endurance riders who spend most of their time on pavement but regularly ride gravel, graded roads, or light off-road surfaces
- Gravel racers who prioritize aerodynamics and run tires in the 27–35mm range
- Riders building a single versatile wheelset rather than maintaining separate road and gravel builds
- Anyone running a 12x100mm front thru-axle with a Centerlock disc brake rotor mount
- Not the right fit for rim brake setups, dedicated gravel builds requiring 40mm+ tires, or riders who prefer clincher (non-tubeless) tires
What to Look For
- Tire width and aero benefit: The AR40's aero optimization is specific to 27mm tires. Riders running significantly wider rubber will still get a functional wheel, but the aerodynamic advantage diminishes outside that optimized range.
- Tubeless commitment: This wheel is designed exclusively for tubeless setups. Confirm your tire, rim tape, and sealant system are tubeless-compatible before purchasing.
- Hub tier: The INNERDRIVE Foundation hub is ENVE's standard-bearing platform — serviceable and reliable, but not the same as their higher-tier hub options. For riders who prioritize bearing longevity or engagement over many years, it's worth understanding the spec before committing.
Key Features
40mm Rim Depth, 25mm Internal Width The rim depth delivers genuine aerodynamic benefit on road and transitional surfaces, while the 25mm internal width supports the wider tire volumes that all-road riding increasingly demands. These aren't marketing dimensions — both directly affect how the wheel performs with modern all-road tire sizing.
Sapim CX-Ray Spokes with Alpina Nylock Brass Nipples CX-Ray bladed spokes are a proven high-performance choice — stiff laterally, light, and reliable under sustained tension. The Alpina Nylock brass nipples resist loosening under vibration and load, which matters on mixed-surface riding where spoke tension migration is more likely.
ENVE INNERDRIVE Foundation Hub The Foundation hub uses standard serviceable bearings in a design built for long-term ownership. It's the accessible entry point into ENVE's in-house hub line — straightforward to maintain, with parts available over time.
Gravel-Qualified Construction ENVE's gravel qualification tests rims against the lateral forces and impact loads of off-road use. For an aero-depth wheel, this certification is meaningful: it defines the boundary of where the AR40 can reasonably go, rather than leaving riders to guess.
Rider Intent Summary
- Biggest strengths: Gravel-certified durability in a 40mm aero rim; 25mm internal width supports modern all-road tire sizing; proven spoke and nipple spec
- Tradeoffs: Tubeless-only; aero optimization is specific to 27mm tires; Foundation hub is the entry tier in ENVE's hub range
- What makes it different: Purpose-built to pass ENVE's gravel standards at 40mm depth — a specific design commitment, not a general-purpose road wheel marketed as versatile
Victory's Take
At Victory Bicycle Studio, we recommend the AR40 to riders who want one front wheel that genuinely earns its place on both fast road rides and rougher terrain — without the compromise of a heavier all-rounder. If your tire choice is in the 27–32mm tubeless range and your riding mixes surfaces, this is a purpose-matched wheel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer free shipping?
We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.
How much does shipping cost?
For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!
How can I track my order?
When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order. If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
