About The Zipp 808 Firecrest Tubeless Front Clincher Bike Wheel
The Zipp 808 Firecrest Tubeless Front Wheel is an 80mm deep carbon rim built for riders who need aerodynamic advantage in high-intensity road events — criteriums, road races, and hard group rides where sustained speed and handling under pressure both matter. The hookless, tubeless-ready rim profile with a 23mm internal width is designed for wider tires at lower pressure, reducing rolling resistance and improving cornering grip without sacrificing the deep-section aero profile that makes the 808 effective.
Zipp's Total System Efficiency (TSE) design approach targets four specific drag factors — wind resistance, gravity, rolling resistance, and vibration losses — simultaneously. The result of that engineering effort is a wheel that is more than 280 grams lighter than its predecessor, paired with ABLC (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control) dimpling technology on the rim surface to manage airflow and improve crosswind stability. The ZR1 disc brake hub runs a center-lock interface with an updated seal design for better long-term durability. Spokes are Sapim CX Sprint J-bend, a stiff, aero-profile option consistent with a race-focused build.
Who It's For
- Road racers and criterium riders who want a deep-section front wheel and are running a disc brake, 12mm thru-axle setup
- Riders who want to run tubeless tires (or tubeless-ready with a tube) on a 700c wheel with a modern hookless rim
- Athletes prioritizing aerodynamic efficiency and weight savings in a race-day front wheel
Consider a shallower rim if your riding is primarily in mountainous terrain with extended descents where crosswind stability and modulation confidence in variable conditions are the priority, or if your local crit courses are particularly exposed and technical.
What to Look For
- Axle and brake compatibility: This wheel requires a 12mm thru-axle with 100mm front spacing and a center-lock disc rotor. Verify both before purchase.
- Tire width and pressure range: The 23mm internal width is optimized for tires in the 28–32mm range. Confirm your frame's tire clearance before specifying tire size.
- Hookless rim requirements: This rim is hookless, which limits compatible tires to those explicitly rated for hookless use. Check tire manufacturer specs before pairing.
Key Features
80mm carbon rim with ABLC dimpling. The Firecrest rim shape is designed to reduce wind resistance and resist yaw-induced handling changes. The ABLC dimple pattern on the rim surface manages the aerodynamic boundary layer to smooth airflow at the rim's widest point, which is a functional detail specific to this rim profile — not a shared feature across the 808 line.
Hookless, tubeless-ready 23mm internal width. The wider internal channel allows lower tire pressures for a given load, which measurably reduces rolling resistance and road vibration. The hookless bead seat is compatible with tubeless tires or tubeless-ready tires run with a tube.
ZR1 disc hub with improved sealing. The updated hub seal design addresses wear and contamination over time — a practical durability improvement for wheels used in variable weather conditions common to road racing.
Sapim CX Sprint spokes. These bladed J-bend spokes are lightweight, stiff, and aero-profiled — appropriate for a race build where spoke drag and lateral stiffness both factor into performance.
Rider Intent Summary
- Biggest strengths: Deep aero profile, significant weight reduction over the previous generation, tubeless-optimized hookless rim with modern hub standards
- Tradeoffs: 80mm depth demands rider confidence in crosswind conditions; hookless rim restricts tire selection to compatible models
- What makes it different: The 23mm internal width combined with ABLC dimpling targets rolling resistance and aerodynamics together — not just rim depth for its own sake
Victory's Take
At Victory Bicycle Studio, we recommend the 808 Firecrest front wheel for riders who are serious about race-day aero performance and are already committed to a disc, thru-axle setup with tubeless tires — it's a focused tool that rewards riders who fit that profile exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer free shipping?
We do offer free shipping on non-bike orders over $100. We do not offer free shipping for bicycles unless it is a one time promotion. Generally, bike shipping will cost $150 and that covers just the shipping of the bike with no assembly. If you were to bring that bike to your local mechanic or bike store, you would pay them their assembly fee. If you choose our Professional Assembly option for $200, our service technicians would assemble the bike before shipping and then re-pack the bike safely for transit. When you receive the bike you would attach the front wheel, attach the seatpost/saddle, and raise the handlebars and clamp them. Those three items do have to be detached to minimize or eliminate the chance of damage in transit.
How much does shipping cost?
For orders of parts, accessories, apparel, etc. on orders under $100, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99. Regular bike shipping without assembly is $150, bike shipping with Professional Assembly is an additional $200 (so $350 in total which includes the $150 of regular shipping). Our White Glove Delivery option is $699 and that will cover the assembly of the bike and our White Glove Delivery partner delivering your dream bike to your front door, ready to ride!
How can I track my order?
When you place your online order, you will receive an instantaneous email update with your order number and order details, and shortly after, you will receive a follow up order email with the tracking number for your order. If you still need assistance with your order, feel free to email us at online@victorybicyclestudio.com and we will respond asap.
